Road Trip Car Maintenance Checklist

road trip automotive maintenance checklist

Everyone loves an excellent road trip, but if you fail in preparing your vehicle for a road trip it can mean disaster. Don’t be deceived into assuming that your brand-new car does not need to be inspected, a quick check can mean the difference in a carefree drive or a roadside malfunction. We’ve created a short car maintenance checklist of the top things you need to inspect prior to your next road trip.

Is My Vehicle All Set For A Journey?

Even if your car is brand-new that does not suggest it’s ready for a lengthy journey. If your vehicle is overdue for an oil change, has a tire with an air leak, or has a burned-out taillight then you definitely must get those things dealt with before imagining the open road. Furthermore, if you do not already have an emergency kit in your car, you should get one before your next journey. Even with all the journey preparation in the world, things can fail. A little bit of prevention can help greatly with unpredicted vehicle problems.

Road Trip Safety List

Okay, you’re ready to give your automobile a once-over with a fine-tooth comb, but where do you begin? Your road trip checklist should concentrate on 3 main areas: Fluids, Wheels and Tires, and Maintenance. While not an extensive checklist, if you thoroughly check these areas your possibility of an uninterrupted journey get better.

  • Oil – As we discussed above, you’ll need to ensure that the oil has been changed recently.
  • Transmission Fluid – Make sure to consult your owner’s manual to see the intervals at which to have it replaced. If it’s overdue, you’ll need to change it out.
  • Radiator fluid – See to it that your antifreeze is completely full for optimal performance and examine your owner’s manual to see if it ought to be changed.
  • Brake Fluid – Being able to brake effectively can be the difference between a crash or not. If you are uncertain, get it inspected
  • Wiper Fluid – If you’re going to be putting in some seat time you’re most likely to hit some bugs or other road debris. Make sure your wiper fluid container is full to get the crud off. Wiper fluid is pointless without great wipers, so replace your wipers while you’re at it.

Check Your Tires

  • Tread – Ensure there are no bald spots and that you have a lot of tread left. Double-check for any punctures that need to be fixed. If they can not be fixed, replace them.
  • Air Pressure – See to it that your tires are pumped up to the proper pressure and that they all have the same pressure in each tire.
  • Rotation – Make sure that your tires don’t need to be rotated. Tires that aren’t balanced/rotated properly can wear unevenly and have an irritating vibration.
  • Spare Tire – Whatever you check on your main tires, do it for your spare also.

Routine Service Issues

  • Light Bulbs – Worn out headlights and taillights can be a safety risk, so make sure they work normally. While you are at it, inspect your directional signal lights and parking lights. You can even update to LED light bulbs for brighter light and reduced power usage
  • Air Filter – If you resemble a lot of us, your air filter needed replacing years ago. It’s simple to do, isn’t very expensive, and can assist with better gas mileage.
  • Belts and Hoses – If you aren’t a mechanic, this might be a little challenging however it can really be rather straightforward. First thing is to try to find splits in the hoses, after that squeeze the tubes to see if they feel fragile. Hoses should feel really rubbery, if they feel brittle or have splits you must change them. Search for leaks on your hoses, particularly where they connect to other parts. Lastly, check the belts to make certain they aren’t loosely attached or have missing notches. A busted belt and/or hose can rapidly wreck your journey and your engine.
  • Battery – Look to make sure the battery terminals are not rusted and that the positive and negative connections are tightened. If your vehicle starts slowly you may need a new battery.
  • Brakes – Being able to stop your car capably is key in avoiding collisions. Changing your brake fluid, replacing the brake pads, and even getting brand-new rotors may be required to have a risk-free automobile for your trip.

Test Drive Your Car Before the Road Trip

You understand your vehicle far better than anyone. Take it out for a fast spin to see if something feels off. This isn’t a pleasure cruise so turn off the radio and concentrate. Does your automobile draw to one side when braking heavily? Does your Air Conditioner blow cold air? If something feels off, you should absolutely have an expert take a look at it.

I recently purchased a new GLE 350 at this dealership. Linda was my sales consultant and she was great! Very personable but professional. She spent a lot of time with me and dealt with all my questions and indecision with patience and honesty. Several other employees and Ali were vey diligent in addressing me and following up. Kristin was my finance manager and she was also a pleasure to work with. I'm very pleased with the overall experience and love my vehicle!

Great experience this time with Daniel. Loner car available upon arrival. I arrived a little early and in/out in 15 minutes. Repairs done timely. Straight forward assessment of needed repairs. All positive. The new waiting area is on point and comfortable. It does seem odd to charge customers for deli items but nice to have it there as an option.
