Trade In My Car or Sell It Myself – Which is Better?

The conventional wisdom is that you’ll obtain more money if you sell your vehicle outright and afterwards purchase an automobile from the dealership. However, that may not really be true because in the majority of states the sales tax collected on a car acquisition is calculated after your trade-in has been factored in. As an example, the vehicle you wish to buy is $30k and if you buy it outright you pay taxes on the full $30k. If we give you $15,000 for your trade-in, then you would be responsible for the taxes on the $15k remaining on the price. The tax obligations would be literally be cut in half. So, while you might be able to get more cash by selling it on your own, the reduced tax obligations and ease of trading it here can negate all additional dollars acquired.
