What are the Differences Between Drivetrain and Powertrain?

Mercedes-Benz powertrain vs drivetrain

How are drivetrain and powertrain different? In short, the drivetrain is what provides the power to move the wheels. The powertrain is made up of the engine and the drivetrain.

Powertrain & Drivetrain

You might not know off the top of your head what the advantages are of comparing a drivetrain vs. powertrain yet when you know the differences between both, it will offer you the upper hand when vehicle purchasing, checking out the auto mechanic, or when Alex Trebek asks you a Jeopardy question regarding car parts that make vehicles move.

Basically, powertrains and drivetrains basically do the exact same thing. They produce kinetic energy to make your car ‘go’. Now, chances are that you’ve never really thought of exactly how important these moving components are. They’re the unsung heroes that get you from point A to point B and they each work in their very own special way.

What are the Drivetrain Components?

Most of the time the terms ‘drivetrain’ and ‘powertrain’ are used interchangeably but, contrary to popular belief, they are not the same. So exactly what is the difference between powertrain parts and drivetrain parts? The most significant difference is the way power is created and dispersed to the car.

A drivetrain is not actually a solitary part of your vehicle – it’s a group of drivetrain parts that interact with the engine to move the wheels and various parts of the vehicle to push it into motion. These parts usually consist of the transmission, differential, driveshaft, axles, CV joints, and the wheels.

How Does A Drivetrain Work?

This is the order in which power is generated and provided by a drivetrain:

  • The engine will create energy to power a flywheel
  • That flywheel works with the transmission to regulate the quantity of power distributed to other components of the drivetrain
  • The driveshaft rotates to generate power to a differential
  • The differential then delivers power from all those driveshaft parts and boom … your wheels are in motion

Powertrain: What is in it?

If you mastered the drivetrain fundamentals, the powertrain basics should be a simple idea to grasp, because of the fact that there is only one specifying variable that sets them apart. That factor is the engine. In a powertrain, the engine is a part of the many moving elements. If you remember from the paragraph above, the drivetrain works with the engine.

The powertrain incorporates every moving component that is critical to the vehicle’s success. Its single objective is transforming kinetic energy into propulsion motion. If one of these components fail your automobile might experience some unusual rattling, or shaking.

I recently purchased a new GLE 350 at this dealership. Linda was my sales consultant and she was great! Very personable but professional. She spent a lot of time with me and dealt with all my questions and indecision with patience and honesty. Several other employees and Ali were vey diligent in addressing me and following up. Kristin was my finance manager and she was also a pleasure to work with. I'm very pleased with the overall experience and love my vehicle!

Great experience this time with Daniel. Loner car available upon arrival. I arrived a little early and in/out in 15 minutes. Repairs done timely. Straight forward assessment of needed repairs. All positive. The new waiting area is on point and comfortable. It does seem odd to charge customers for deli items but nice to have it there as an option.
